From Punishment to Power: How to Actually Enjoy Exercise

How to reframe fitness as self-care, not punishment, with joyful movement ideas.

Self-care can be defined as taking action to improve one’s health, protect one’s happiness and well-being.  Typically, when we think of self-care, we imagine things like bubble baths, facials, sleeping in, shopping sprees, and other relaxing activities.  Usually, exercise is not the first thing that comes to mind, but it should be high on the self-care list.

Often, exercise is seen as a chore-something we have to do.  This mindset can make it harder to stay active and enjoy the benefits of being fit.  Instead of treating it as another thing to complete on the to-do list, think of staying physically active as a great way to show self-love.  Moving more provides benefits such as helping to manage weight, reducing risk of chronic disease, improving mood, improving brain function, increasing energy and longevity.

Reframing exercise as a form of self-care helps create healthier habits and improve one’s overall well being- transforming exercise as a positive experience rather than a chore.  Begin to make the shift by doing the following:

Even doing simple workouts like this everyday for some time can feel good.

  1. Choose what you love.  Begin with activities that you love.  Whether it’s hiking, swimming, or dancing.  When you love what you are doing, it feels more like play, and less like work.

  2. Set small goals.  Now begin sprinkling in strength training.  Start with short 15-10 minute sessions.  Small wins add up and make you feel good.  When you feel good about your exercise routine, it makes exercise less of a chore!

  3. Create a Routine.  When you make exercise a part of your daily routine, it becomes a habit that you don’t want to miss!

  4. Partner Up.  Either exercise with a friend or join a class.  Sometimes having an exercise partner keeps things fun as well as keeps you motivated.

  5. Reward Yourself. When you reach a goal, treat yourself with a relaxing and/or enjoyable experience such as a massage, pedicure, or a good book.  Rewards

make the journey enjoyable, giving you something to look forward to.
